Women can be raising their risk of breast cancer without knowing it. British official at the Department of Health said that women who drink more than fourteen units of alcohol a week (a unit is 10 ml or approximately one ounce) raise their risk of developing breast cancer by 50 percent. A single glass of wine can contain 3.5 units. “Women who regularly drink too much are 50 percent more likely to develop breast cancer,” said British Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo. “And many drink too much simply because they have no idea how many alcohol units they are consuming.” Of special concern are professional women whose alcohol consumption “has gone under the radar,” according to Primarolo. “It’s fair to say that most women don’t know how much they’re drinking.” Larger glass sizes may put a single glass of wine over a woman’s daily amount.
